Better Brazoria Clean Air & Water is a 17-year-old 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focused on environmental issues, primarily in southern Brazoria County next to the 7,000-acre Dow Chemical complex. 
 

Our MISSION is to fight for clean air and water for all residents, improve public health, and seek a better quality of life, free from pollution and threats of chemical calamities. Our internationally-known Executive Director, Melanie Oldham, serves on environmental strategy councils in Europe and nationally.

Here’s what Better Brazoria and our Founder / Executive Director Melanie Oldham has done to protect our environment:

​​PROGRAM AND PROTEST DIRECTOR

Partnered with Sierra Club to challenge approval of the Sea Port Oil Terminal (SPOT) at the U.S. 5th Circuit Court.

Testified at U.S. Maritime Administration hearing on application for the SPOT oil terminal planned for southern Brazoria County.

Organized and directed citizens and elected officials campaign to protest both the SPOT and the GulfLink Oil Terminal projects planned for southern Brazoria County. Both projects are still being delayed and have little financial support after 5 years.

Funded and publicized a 2023 Tax Abatement Study highlighting the $2.1 billion in property tax refunds given by local government agencies to the largest petrochemical companies in the Dow Chemical complex. Testified at public hearings to protest these giveaways.

Worked with Texas and federal officials to require Freeport LNG to resolve safety issues before reopening after a massive pipeline explosion here in 2022. Led public protests and letter-writing campaign to influence public officials.

Worked with village officials in Jones Creek and Surfside Beach to oppose the construction of the GulfLink and SPOT oil pipelines respectfully through their communities.

Led public campaign to protest treatment by the Port of Freeport of the Freeport East End and Quintana minority communities, which is being displaced by Port expansion.

Worked with the Port Sustainability Committee to adopt a new Clean Port Plan, and helped secure a $1.4 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to initiate the Plan.

Planned and directed Better Brazoria participation in 5 community-based event each year, including a Better Brazoria Bash summer picnic event that attracts over 800 people. All events include educational components on environmental dangers, including programs for children.

Senior Planning Committee for one of the largest national environmental protest events in history, the three-month long Summer of Heat protest marches in New York City targeting the banks and insurance companies supporting the fossil fuel industry. 

Worked with the Japanese press and Japanese activists to protest their JERA company’s funding of Freeport LNG exports.

Created the Citizens Environmental Education and Mobilization Task Force to organize and train citizens for active and on-going protests against environmental dangers, tax giveaways, and current or proposed laws that damage the environment or harm local disadvantaged communities.

ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNS ORGANIZER

Planned and led dozens of public and legislative outreach campaigns on environmental issues, primarily oil, gas, and LNG regulations in coastal Texas area. Campaigns included Gulf Coast Summer of Heat in NYC, Permian Basin Gulf Coast Coalition, Global Week of Action in NYC, and Lobby Days in Washington, D.C., among many others.

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SPEAKER

Invited speaker and panelist at numerous national and international environmental conferences, and member of select panels meeting with industry executives, including Chubb Insurance, in New York and Washington, D.C.  Recently…

Speaker at ING bank AGM conference in Amsterdam, and met with 4 ING bank executives on the risks of LNG,  2024

Worked with Andreas Kaiser, government delegate from Germany, at the Americas Energy Summit in New Orleans 2024 on international cooperation on LNG restrictions.

Spoke at CERA Week environmental rally in Houston on climate change and LNG, 2024.

Invited speaker at PRPC National Pipeline Conference in Atlanta, 2024.

Speaker at the TSU Thurgood Marshall School of Law, address on carbon capture to audience of environmental attorneys, 2024.

Testified at Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on Methane Rule proposal, 2024.

COMMITTEE CHAIR
